4 Useful Tips to Uncover Your Purpose

God plants a purpose deep inside each of us, a role in the universe which can be played by no one else. If you’re unsure of your role, you need to dive deep and review the 4 useful tips to uncover your purpose.

The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out (Proverbs 20:5).

What if our purpose is not obvious?

Sometimes we need to do a little work to figure it out. For example, I came to know Jesus through an Ironman triathlon (no, this isn’t necessary for everyone!). However, being a triathlete is not my purpose in life.

God used athletic endurance events to teach me perseverance and courage. Triathlons were simply a tool God used to highlight why He put me where He did.

Question to ponder: What is God teaching you?

Another angle to take to discover your purpose is to examine your passions. One of my favorite activities in life is writing. So, after years of putting off becoming a writer out of fear, I ventured out and created a blog. Since that time, I’ve realized my purpose is to write about courage and perseverance.

Question to Ponder: What are you passionate about?

Your passions can help you uncover your purpose

Writing means putting myself on the line. What if people don’t like what I write? Every time I say I’m a writer, I quickly glance around the room to make sure people aren’t frowning or laughing. Did I just say I’m a writer? The emotions are real.

Writing involves more personal risk than anything I’ve done yet in my life. It’s scary because these aren’t just words on a page, they’re part of me. I give my readers a piece of who I am. Thus, facing my fear helped me uncover my purpose.

Question to Ponder: What dreams scare you?

When I review my life, situations in my history confirm this calling for me. God led me through some very specific events, including playing football on a boys’ team, becoming an Ironman triathlete, and completing an ultramarathon as lessons for me. As a result, these events shaped my foundation of endurance.

I only have my own experience to go by. But, I found 4 incredibly useful tips to uncover your purpose.

#1 Uncover your Purpose by Looking to Areas of Growth

God teaches us all different lessons at different times. God guides one person to work on a specific area of life while nudging the next person along a separate course. What you are learning is potentially related to your purpose.

#2 Uncover your Purpose by Understanding your Passions

What do you feel passionate about? What activity do you engage in which rarely feels like work? Our passions are God’s plans bubbling up from the inside, specific to who we are and to our purpose.

#3 Uncover your Purpose by Identifying Fears

No growth occurs in our lives, whether physically, mentally, or spiritually, until we leave our comfort zones. In other words, leaving what is familiar opens us to the grip of fear. Our purpose is from God, and God desires reliance on Him. Therefore, that purpose tends to involve a component which makes us fearful and thus leads us to step closer to Him. What dreams are you afraid to attempt?

#4 Uncover your purpose by Reviewing your Life History

What recurring themes continue to pop up year after year in your life? Our past can be a lamplight to our future. Enduring difficult trials makes us uniquely qualified to comfort another person in the same situation.

Take some time to journal about the 4 useful tips to uncover your purpose. This purpose is likely found within a mix of your areas of growth, passions, fears, and life history. Knowing your purpose can help you beat frustration! (see prior post)

  1. I can really relate to what you wrote about writing. I’m feeling this now more than ever as I prepare to release my first book into the world.

    I can really relate! Fulfilling the dream is scary! And yet, I’m finding that confronting the fear, while uncomfortable, is liberating. I can feel myself growing, becoming who God made me to be.
