Hey blog peeps,
I celebrated my birthday this past weekend, and a friend asked me three very important questions which generated a moment of reflection over the past year:
What would I describe as the best thing about my last year?
What was the worst thing?
What do I look forward to in the future?
Best Thing
The hundred mile ultramarathon tops the list of the greatest things I experienced over my last year of life. God brought support in the form of friends, my family, and my coaches. Let me give a special shout-out to my crew who proved a pivotal pin in my success. I see God’s face and my great need for Him when challenged with big events.
The mental game I utilized has my mind exhausted even today. I avoid the idea of digging deep to finish a workout, but I know that will change. Despite what it cost me to complete the race, I didn’t hit the bottom of my potential or reserve. There’s still more in the tank for future endeavors, athletic and otherwise.
One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24, NIV)
Worst Thing
I fought a few battles in the past year because fear prevented someone else from doing the appropriate thing. Sometimes people’s weaknesses perpetuate undesirable situations. The quote goes, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”* In the absence of leadership, I lead.
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy (Proverbs 31:8-9)
Looking Forward
I began to walk with a new sense of security over the last two years. Previously, I felt slightly deficient living apart from the cookie cutter life with a husband, a white picket fence, and 2.5 kids. I wouldn’t trade my experiences, like playing football, competing in endurance races, or traveling for anything. But, over the last two and a half years, I’ve begun to relish my everyday life. Somehow I transitioned from wanting to having. I stepped out of never enough and now live in more than enough. I’m excited to see how this plays out!
And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).
Spending a moment of reflection over the last year takes stock of areas for gratitude and prayer.
To all those who wished me, “Happy birthday!” and shared in my most favorite day of the whole year: Thank you!
Love, K.
